Summer Art Extravaganza One week

Summer Art Extravaganza 6 weeks

Join us this summer for our Summer Art Extravaganza – six weeks of fun, messy, colorful, and crazy art projects, with a different theme each week!  Choose as many weeks as you would like, but you must commit to both days of the week(s) that you choose, and you must sign up by the Thursday before the week your child will be attending.  Snack will be provided- and remember to wear “art-making” clothes!

Week 1:  Wacky Portraits , July 7 and 9 (sign-up deadline July 3)
Students will create self or imaginary portraits by playing around with found objects, painting, drawing, and digital cameras, and will see a face in a whole new way!

Week 2:  Crazy with Color , July 14 and 16 (sign-up deadline July 10)
Working together, students will create large murals using finger paint and learn about the art behind abstraction.

Week 3:  Indoor Outdoor Sculpture , July 21 and 23 (sign-up deadline July 17)
Sculpture can be done with sticks, plaster, paper mache, leaves - almost anything!  Learn how to make your own sculptures both inside and out, and discover the artwork of outdoor sculptor Andy Goldsworthy.

Week 4:  The Fun of Printmaking , July 28 and 30 (sign-up deadline July 24)
Learn all different techniques for making your own prints. Use these techniques to make your own cards, posters, and artwork.  Monoprints, collographs, crayon shavings...the possibilities are endless. 

Week 5:  Fantastic Fabric, August 4 and 6 (sign-up deadline July 31)
Students will use fabric to create collages, tie-dye their own clothing, and make other kinds of three-dimensional art.

Week 6:  Painting with Texture, August 11 and 13 (sign-up deadline August 7)
You can paint with more than just paint.  Discover how to make beautiful pictures with salt, glue, or even toilet paper!

 

The World We See: Clay Camp with Mame Ramy McKee

We will create and decorate a variety of sculptured critters using basic hand building techniques. Our goal is to make a forest or ocean or desert full of little characters with big personalities. Along the way we will explore what these creations eat, where they sleep and what their lives are like. Expect to get dirty and to clean up. Low sugar beverages and snacks are encouraged as we will be working hard!

Mask Making with Chepe Cuadra

Learn how to bring your imagination, and artwork, to come alive with mask-making and acting!  We will be making masks based on our favorite characters from movies, books, cartoons, or your mind.  After developing your character and acting out their story, you will use paper mache and many more exciting materials to make your character, including things found around your house. Making Things Move: Animation Camp

Enjoy the satisfaction of making your artwork and favorite objects come to life with Stop-Motion animation!  You can learn to draw or sculpt your own characters to bring to life and animate objects using a digital camera and video editing on the computer.  Animation Camp will have you drawing, sculpting, doing set design and decoration, storytelling, using digital photography, photo-editing, and even making music!  Everyone will end the week with a DVD of the whole classes work!  Bring a bag lunch!

 

3-D Art: Sculpture Camp with Harlan Mack

Come explore the exciting world of 3-D art.  Learn about shape, form, proportion while using all kinds of materials, like wood, wire, and found objects.  All sculpture work will be done with creative joinery – no glue will be used!  This class is a fun way to work on creative thinking skills, and the building process.  Make your imagination come alive!  And don’t forget to see Harlan’s own sculptures in the Exposed! Outdoor Sculpture Show starting July 11th.

 

Reflecting Nature: Clay Camp with Mame Ramey McKee

In this camp, we will be creating mirror frames, mirrored trays, mirrored sculptures - each student will choose what they want to make. This older group of kids will sketch their ideas out, collect plants, branches, seed pods, etc from the wonderful grounds surrounding the Green Mountain Seminary Building, and then use these found objects as textures for the clay to create mixed media works. A great finished product to reflect a bit of the summer back to these artists!  Low sugar beverages and snacks are encouraged.

Join jewelry artist Karla Van Vliet in making wearable art!  Learn basic jewelry construction, including “piggy-tail linking” done with silver wire to link beads together.  Also learn about the design concepts of jewelry, and how to make your necklace stand out. 
Students should bring two sets of pliers; needle nose and narrow flat nose pliers, and wire cutters.  There will be some beads available for purchase at the workshop, or students are welcome to bring their own beads to work with.  Please contact Kiersten with any questions about materials.

Whether you enjoy straight lines and rich earth tones or wavy profiles with wild colors join us as we explore, design and then create individualized garden planters using basic hand building methods. Bring your own design ideas or brainstorm with Mame to make your own ideal planter on Saturday. Sunday the work will be detailed and refined then decorated.  Be ready to roll up your sleeves and get messy – just like playing in the garden but without the sore knees! Painting Landscapes & the Model with Susie Amato

This workshop explores the abstract, the fugitive and realism in painting the Vermont landscape and the model. We will focus on compositional dynamics, light and shadow, volume and hue. Using this structure the artist is encouraged to explore and develop their personal choices. The class will master the color study with little detail as well as working on larger canvases focusing more on composition. Bring your own supplies

 

Environment & Animal Portraiture with Susie Amato

This workshop will explore the Vermont landscape and will use farm animals as it’s subject. Scenic Stowe & Garden Festival Photography Workshop with Paul Rogers

Practice your photography skills during the spectacular Garden Festival Weekend. Classroom discussions and equipment demonstrations will prepare participants for photo-ops in historic Stowe village and at scenic spots around town. Friday and Saturday’s field trips will “focus” on local gardens. Specialized close-up techniques will equip the novice and advanced photographer to capture successful images of botanical subjects. The field portion of this workshop will be slow-paced, and will likely be done on paths and even terrain. Students are required to bring their own digital or film camera and appropriate memory cards or film. Recommended gear includes: accessory lenses, tripod, sturdy footwear, raincoat, cap, sunscreen, water, bag lunch or dinner. Digital cameras of all levels may be used. Film capture is acceptable, though processing in time for daily class discussions may be impractical.

Scenic Stowe & Balloon Festival Photography Workshop
with Paul Rogers

In addition to documenting two scheduled balloon launches (featuring as many as 25 balloons each), we will visit historic and scenic sites around Stowe. Summer 2008 Instructors

Susie Amato has shown her work and taught art all over the world.  Some of her educational experiences include UCLA, Parsons School of Design, and the National Academy of Design.  Susie is also the founder of Artists In Conflict: Africa Extreme Plein Air Workshop, which specializing in working with young people and adults in Third World countries. Susie has taught many popular workshops at the Helen Day in the past and this summer will teach Environment & Animal Portraiture and Drawing on Main Street.

Tricia Bache received a bachelor’s degree in art education from Johnson State College and is a licensed art teacher. She has worked at the studios at Johnson State, was the head art teacher at the Chestnut Hill School Summer Program in Massachusetts, and is currently a para-educator at Lamoille Union High School.  She is excited to teach the summer art program here at Helen Day and can’t wait to share her love of art with the students around her.  Tricia will be the instructor for our Summer Art Extravaganza.

Chepe Cuadra has been an artist most of his life, and has studied art in Nicaragua, California, Barcelona, and Vermont.  Chepe holds a Bachelors degree in Art from Johnson State College, and has taught at the college level and for private studios.  His work has been shown in galleries in Barcelona, Spain, Venice, Italy, Bogota, Colombia, and Granada Nicaragua.  Chepe will be teaching the Mask-Making and Mural workshops.

Harlan Mack is a sculptor and painter from Washington, Vermont.  He graduated in 2007 with a BFA from Johnson and is currently in their MFA graduate program. Before moving to Johnson in 2002 he worked in the art department on a number of independent films in San Francisco, Ohio, and Rutland, Vermont. Recently he has been focusing on steel sculpture. You may have seen his steel animals (The Three G’s) in front of the Town Hall Theatre last year for the EXPOSED! exhibit here in Stowe.  Harlan will be the instructor for our Animation and Sculpture camps.

Meg McDevitt is an artist who maintains a studio and life in Johnson, Vermont.  She currently teaches sculpture and drawing at the University of Vermont.  She is a graduate of Cooper Union and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts.  Meg curates the Exposed! Sculpture exhibit at the Helen Day Art Center and taught Drawing 101 in our Fall 2007 session.  Meg will teach another Drawing class here this summer.

Mame Raney McKee became involved with the birth of Vermont Clay Studio in Montpelier through grant writing.  As the owner of Schoolhouse Pottery, formerly in Moscow, Mame is well known to area families for teaching all levels of clay courses for more than a decade. Her own art journey currently features photography, writing, pastels and, of course, clay. Mame will be the instructor for the clay workshops for youth and adults at her new, expanded facility, Seminary Art Center, in Waterbury Center.

Paul Rogers holds a BFA degree from the School of Photographic Arts & Sciences at Rochester Institute of Technology.  Paul has done photography work for man global and local companies, and has taught photo workshops for the Helen Day in the past and this summer will teach the Garden Fest and Balloon Fest Photography Workshops.  www.paulrogersphotography.net

Leigh Ann Rooney received her BA with a major n Studio Art from the University of Vermont, and went on to complete her Master’s in Fine Arts at the New York Academy of Art where she majored in painting.  Leigh Ann considers herself a perpetual student, and enjoys nothing more than sharing her love of art with others.  Leigh Ann is teaching the Painting and Drawing From Nature classes for both youth and adults.

Karla Van Vliet creates not only one-of-a-kind jewelry, but paintings, and poetry as well. She is also the creator of Van Vliet Arts.  After attending Bennington College, she finished her BA at Goddard College.  Over the last several years she has begun to show her paintings and jewelry in Vermont galleries and boutiques, and has taught jewelry workshops around Vermont.  This summer at the Helen Day, Karla will be teaching the Silver Wire and Recycled Jewelry Workshops. www.vanvlietarts.com
